Parent Educator (part-time)

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE: 

  • Empower parents to support the educational growth of their children

  • Work in an Early Childhood Family Education program focusing on the needs of the family

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education/Certification:

Required: Current MN teaching certificate in Parenting Education

Special Knowledge/Skills:

·         Strong communication and interpersonal skills

·         Must be familiar with the community and community support agencies

·         Knowledge of child development and effective parenting techniques

·         Must exhibit a willingness to assist in the personal development of low-income families

·         Must be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the families and program

·         Working hours must be flexible to accommodate work in the evening and some weekends

Experience:

·         Experience working in an educational, social services or family literacy setting

·         Experience working with parents and young children

·         Experience working with families with diverse cultural and economic backgrounds

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1.   Create a welcoming environment for parents and children

2.    Plan and implement developmentally appropriate early childhood and parent/child curriculum based on the needs and interests of the families

3.   Work with ECFE Coordinator, teacher assistants, and other school personnel as a fully participating team member

4.  Maintain attendance records of parent education classes

5.  Ensure high standard of ethics by providing for family confidentiality

6.  Work collaboratively with other agencies to enhance services to families

7.  Maintain knowledge of current parent education practices

8.   Along with the ECFE Coordinator and early childhood teacher, give direction to teacher assistants

9.    Organize, prepare for, and conduct home visits to families with children birth to entering Kindergarten

10.  Organize, prepare for, and conduct day care visits to local family day care homes

11.  Write parenting column for the local newspaper

12.  Assist in the research, preparation and coordination of applicable grants

13.  Along with the ECFE Coordinator, help maintain inventory of supplies and equipment

14.  Communicate concerns and ideas to Community Education Director and ECFE Coordinator

15.  Attend ECFE Advisory Council Meetings

16.  Attend ECFE conferences, workshops or trainings to enhance professional growth

17. Other duties as assigned

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; adapt and change plans quickly

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Occasional district and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours
