Bilingual Special Education Assistant

Job Summary:

At Aurora Charter School, we believe our greatest resource is the people who form our team.   The Bilingual Special Education Assistant under the supervision of the SPED Case Manager is responsible for working with small groups or individual students that are in need of support in reading and/or math concepts and skills. This position will be assigned specifically to the Special Education department to assist students. 

Duties/Responsibilities:  

  • Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills. 

  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.

  • Assists professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.

  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.

  • Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.

  • Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.

  • Assists students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas.

  • Accompanies students on field trips for the purpose of assisting with supervision.

  • Constructs, copies and distributes, and uses educational materials as needed.

  •  Assists teachers with parent contact as requested in Spanish/English to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.

  • Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement if IEP objectives, etc.

  • Participates in the IEP process and serves as a resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed.

  • Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including curriculum nights, parent/teacher conferences, and school events. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.    

Required Skills/Abilities:    

  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form in Spanish and English.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also being a strong team player

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals. 

  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.

  • High level of patience and ability to calmly and clearly communicate with students, staff and parents

  • Demonstrates multi-cultural experience and ability to communicate with limited English speakers

 

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum education is a high school diploma, candidates with an associate or BA/BS degrees preferred.

  • Experience working with children in a K-12 setting preferred

  • Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment, must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License or state identification, must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, and must comply with organizational and district policies. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Required to lift or carry classroom supplies, textbooks, furniture, and equipment to a minimum of 35 pounds.  

  • Required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, grab, pull, hear, see, and speak on a daily basis.

  • Required to perform repetitive physical tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading
