Job Summary:
The Special Education Paraprofessional provides one-on-one and small group support to special education students who are in a setting III classroom. This includes instructional support, behavior management,  assisting students with activities of daily living, and communicating student academic and behavioral successes and/or concerns. The percentage of time spent on essential duties and responsibilities will be dependent on individual student’s needs and abilities.  

The secondary paraprofessional provides direct support to students with emotional and behavioral issues, as well as learning needs, in both a center-based special education classroom and a regular education setting. The primary responsibility will be with assisting students and implement strategies for learning academic and behavioral skills, such as reading, math, and self-regulation; assisting students with learning skills needed to transition to greater independence; participate in team planning meetings and other duties assigned by staff. The job requires being mobile and on your feet the majority of time.


Candidates are required to have at least two years of post-secondary education and previous experience working in a school setting with children with disabilities; comfort level in working with students with significant challenges; good communication skills.  Alternative to the two years of post-secondary education requirement is achieving a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment.  Having the ability: to work with students having emotional, physical, and mental health needs; to take initiative in responding to students’ needs in a manner that is accepting and comfortable; to provide opportunities for students to complete tasks independently, when appropriate; flexibility in responding to students’ needs; to maintain student confidentiality; to work with students individually, in groups, in a resource room, or through computer use; to respond to health care needs such as toileting, catheterization, lifting and physical restraint. Knowledge of or prior experience with learning and behavior management techniques preferred.
